4.12.08 Mosaic Hike: Tram

Date change:The Mosaic tram hike will be Saturday, April 12, 2008.

Ride high in the sky! This urban ramble will take us past the downtown farmer's market, through the SW hills and up to the OHSU tram. We'll ride the arial tram down to the waterfront and loop back to our starting place.

What: Tram hike
When: 12 noon
Where: Meet at the Starbucks on the corner of SW Park and Clay (in the park blocks)
Difficulty: Moderate. A significant portion will be uphill.

The starting point is easily accessible by public transporation (MAX, bus, or streetcar) and y'all are encouraged to utilize it.

4.5.08 Darfur - What Can We Do?

As part of Genocide Awareness Month, John Prendergast, co-chair of ENOUGH and former Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, will speak.

John Prendergast, has travelled to the camps with the likes of Don Cheadle (of Hotel Rwanda) Elie Wiesel, and prominent politicians. His recent book, co-authored by Don Cheadle, called "Not on Our Watch" is a blueprint for anti genocide activism. John Prendergast is currently the co-chair of ENOUGH (www.enoughproject.org).

The goal of ENOUGH is to advocate for the abolishment of genocide and mass atrocities. The goal in bringing John to Oregon is to help us advocate for and educate about Darfur and an end to genocide in a more cohesive and comprehensive way. Join us and learn more about what you can do

3.23.08 Mosaic Hike: Lacamas Lake

Escape to Lacamas Lake in Camas, WA, only 15 miles from Portland but a world away. Spend the first Sunday of Spring on this flat and scenic hike along the Heritage Trail skirting the shoreline of Lacamas Lake, passing stately homes with scenic waterfront vistas. We'll stop for a picnic lunch halfway through on this roundtrip excursion and enjoy the views.

3.9.08 Mosaic Hike: Hoyt Arboretum

Sunday, March 9th

Time to meet: 11:00am

Where to meet: The Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center

Length of Trip, Elevation Gain: 4 miles/flat. We'll probably reach the end in about 2 hours.

There's a parking lot near the Visitor Center. Last weekend it was pretty full. All depends on the weather. If you can't park there, it's a short hike from the larger parking lot near the World Forestry Center.

Bring an extra pair of shoes to change into in case it's muddy. Also wear layers b/c it's colder in the shadier spots. Depending on the weather, you may want to wear some sunscreen or a hat.

Bring your dog on a leash (don't forget baggies)

It's a beautiful time of year to check out the trees in bloom. Last weekend things were just getting started. So, not so many flowers. But always a beautiful hike. This would be a great hike if you are unsure of your hiking affinity or abilities. We'll stroll the perimeter of the Arboretum. It's easy (mostly) flat & beautiful.

It's time to get out of the city! Join Mosaic for this classic Oregon hike. We'll pass multiple waterfalls as we pass through this beautiful canyon in the Columbia River Gorge. Meet at MJCC parking lot at 9 AM.

2.17.08 Mosaic Hike: Snowshoeing

Time: Meet at 9 a.m. Location: Gateway Transit Center (accessible by public transportation, and also room for parking). Transportation to the snowshoeing: rsvp as a driver or passenger and carpooling will be set up. Costs: ~$15 for snow shoe and pole rental; $5 for a vehicle day pass (one per vehicle); gas money to help the drivers.

1.10.07 Jewish Meditation and Discussion of the Afterlife in Jewish Thought

Our Rosh Hodesh women's study group continues on January 10th at 7:00pm. Rosh Hodesh, the holiday celebrating the new moon, has been traditionally associated with women. We meet monthly in a different part of the city with a different woman rabbi, teacher, or scholar to lead our discussion. This month we are breaking the woman discussion leader rule to allow Rabbi Zuki to lead us in meditation and discussion. It just sounded too interesting to pass up. Guys, let us know if you are interested and maybe we can convince Rabbi Zuki to come back and do another one for everyone!

1.27.07 Outdoor Restoration Tu B'shevat Project

Tu B'shevat is the Jewish holiday that celebrates trees. So Urban Jews is going to get our hands dirty! We will be meeting up at the Robison Home, Portland's Jewish Old Age home to help the residents plant seeds to celebrate the holiday and then we will go out to the Forest and or wetlands on the property and help them take care of it. They want to be good stewards of their land and we are going to help.

11.16.07 Chik Chok Services and Dinner

Join other Urban Jews as we celebrate Shabbat at Chik Chok services and dinner.

This is a smaller, monthly service located at Congregation Neveh Shalom. Lively, participatory Carlebach-style services at 6:00pm are followed by a community dinner. 10.31.07 Want to see something scary this Halloween?

We all love watching scary movies this time of year. This film is a documentary about anti-semitism.

"EVER AGAIN" narrated by Kevin Costner will be showing at PSU Smith Memorial Student Union on Wednesday October 31st at 2:30pm, this important program is sponsored by Simon Wiesenthal Center and co-sponsored by Community Relations Committee, Portland Chapter of Hadassah and Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies at PSU. The film will be followed by a panel discussion including Rabbi Aron Heir of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in LA, PSU faculty Linda Maizels, Aomar Boum and Victoria Belco.

10.11.07 October Rosh Hodesh Women's Group

Join us for our second Rosh Hodesh group meeting! Traditinally Rosh Hodesh, the new moon festival which occurs monthly, has been a sort of holiday for Jewish women. Recently, feminists brought back the holiday and encouraged women to meet monthly to study together.

Each month we will be meeting with a different woman rabbi, scholar, or teacher in a different part of the city.

We will meet in SE this time with the brilliant and hilarious Emily Simon for a discussion of the week's parsha, or the section of biblical text that is read that week. Amy has generously offered to share her home in SE with us on Thursday October 11th, 7pm.

8.15.07 Rosh Hodesh Study Group for Women!

We will have our first Rosh Hodesh study group for women on August 15 at 7 pm at Local Beet on Alberta.

We would like to meet each month in a different part of the city with a different woman rabbi, scholar, or teacher to lead our discussion. Traditionally, Rosh Hodesh, the first day of each month in the Jewish calendar, is a holiday with special meaning for women and many women have formed study groups to celebrate the occasion. 7.29.07 Suavie Island Hike and Berry Picking!

Come hike to Warrior Rock Lighthouse. The distance is 6 miles round trip, 2-3 hours, with 10 feet elevation gain. After wards we will go and forage for berries on Kruger's Farm.

We will meet at 1:00pm at Sam's Cracker Barrel, which is the convenience store immediately to your left after you cross the bridge on to Sauvie Island. Here, a $3.50 permit per car should be purchased. From 405N take US 30 West St. Helens exit, go 9.3 miles until you see the sign for Sauvie Island. Cross the bridge, meet at Sam's, get permit. 7.22.07 Free lecture with Nicholas Kristof

Continuing the theme of engagement in the world, Urban Jews will be attending a free lecture by Nicholas Kristof, the Pulitzer prize-winning columnist who arguably has done more than anyone else to raise awareness about Darfur. The lecture is Sunday July 22, at 7:00 pm at Temple Beth Israel.

Join us for a Sewing party to help our friends finish their chupah! Our friends Helene and Jaime need help finishing the chupah, the canopy for their wedding. The best part is all YOU need to know how to do it is to sew a button. And if you cant sew a button, Helene will teach you! They need as many people as possible (bring friends) to help. So far about 300 hours have been put into this and there are a lot of things left to do! Portland State University, 7:00-8:00, Smith Memorial Student Union Building Room 238. Come meet the filmmakers who are creating a riveting new documentary (2008 release) about the lives of young men from the U.S.A., France, Brazil , and South Africa who join the Israeli Army. Come see footage from the film-in-progress, with Q & A about the process of independent filmmaking, the subjects of the film, and the motivations of non-Israelis who leave their families to fight for the Jewish State. Roll up for the Magical Mystery city-wide synagogue a month tour as Ruth Messinger, President of American Jewish World Service, speaks on "Bearing Witness: Crisis in Darfur" at Congregation Beth Israel, on Friday evening, April 20, 2007 during 7:00 p.m. Shabbat Services. The communities of Congregation Beth Israel and Havurah Shalom are joining together for Shabbat services on April 20th to hear Ms. Messinger's firsthand account of the situation in Dafur. We will go out after this service.

4.8.07 Israeli Dancing

Israeli Dancing and Fulton Park Community Center. Join us for a beginning Israeli folkdance class at 8 pm followed by open dancing at 9 pm. Don't worry if you've never danced before! It'll be fun!

1.29.07 Jewish Film Festival

Join us for two films as part of the Jewish Film Festival. What A Wonderful Place, Israel's 2005 Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film, highlights the difficulties experienced by foreign workers in contemporary Israel. The Tribe asks what Barbie has to teach us about American Jewish identity, and director Tiffany Shlain offers answers in her witty look at 5,000 years of Jewish history and the all-American doll with the Jewish mother.

Join us as we celebrate the Hanukah season in traditional potluck style with a fabulous Shabbat-luck hosted by Jaime and Helene. All the usual suspects including old friends, chanukkiyah, and latkes will be in attendance, and we hope you will be, too! In the potluck spirit, please feel free to contribute to the meal by bringing some sort of delicious food item; suggestions include drinks, jelly donuts, and kugel, but don't let this short list stifle your creativity!
