UrbanJew is the brainchild of several of Portland's finest...Jews, that is.

Not long ago, five Jewesses and three man-Jews gathered to discuss the state of Portland's young, post-college Jewish community.

In talking, each of us expressed a desire and longing for a more vibrant community; one that was both engaging and relevant to where we were in our lives. We are readers, and bikers, and runners, and hikers; writers, professionals, students, and teachers. We wanted to create a community that respected each of our interests and could provide, in some small way, for each.

We decided that the biggest obstacle to developing this community was a disconnect that exists between many of Portland's young Jews. Roughly half of Portland's twenty- and thirty-somethings are transplants, so it's no wonder that many youngsters feel distant from an established Jewish community.

UrbanJew is our answer to the lack of cohesion in Portland's post-collegiate Jewish community. We will provide up to date news, events, and activities of interest to, well, us. As Jews. Hopefully you'll get something out of it, too!
